Element inaugurates world leading laboratory in materials science

Last week, Element inaugurated a new laboratory for materials engineering and measurement engineering services. With its state-of-the-art equipment and expertise, the Sweden-based laboratory will constitute an important hub in the Swedish and Nordic technology sectors.

The company Element Materials Technology Group is a global provider of services in measurement technology, testing, and materials testing. On October 5, the company’s new laboratory in the Swedish city of Linköping was inaugurated after a long period of renovation and remodeling. The state-of-the-art laboratory is one of the Element’s largest and most modern. The laboratory will be used for a wide range of advanced tasks within materials technology and measurement technology, where the customer base consists of a significant proportion of Swedish and Nordic industry., as well as the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (Försvarets Materielverk).

The inauguration was attended by around a hundred invitees from industry and the media. The participants were treated to a tour and demonstration of the laboratory’s capabilities in metallic operations, calibration, polymeric materials- and composite operations, as well as propellants- and lubricants operations. For example, the guests got to see how damage investigations are carried out, which methods are used in non-destructive testing (NDT), and learn why it is important to calibrate measuring instruments. During the afternoon, Axel Bååthe from SAAB gave a guest lecture about the company’s innovation hub The Rainforest. Among other things, he talked about their ongoing development of unmanned aerial vehicles. Björn Kullman, Division Director for Element Sverige, commented the inauguration.

– I am very proud to present our new laboratory. Element Sweden continues to be at the forefront of materials technology, and we can offer our customers the latest in materials testing and calibration, It was great to see that so many guests from the Nordic technology sector showed up at the inauguration. It demonstrates the interest in what we do here, as well as how important this laboratory is, says Björn Kullman.

The laboratory will be used by both Element Materials Technology, which focuses on materials technology, and by the group’s calibration division Element Metech. The laboratory is approximately 7,000 square meters in size and is accredited according to ISO 17025. Approximately 150 employees work in the laboratory and Element’s Swedish headquarters in the same building. The Swedish operations that are today part of Element have a long history in the country. The materials engineering organization traces its roots to the year 1920 in Linköping, as a material testing unit within the Swedish Armed Forces in connection with the creation of the Swedish Air Force. The calibration organization started in 1947 as part of the Swedish air force’s instrument workshop. Today, Element’s Swedish operations are much broader than that. However, the aerospace and defense sectors remain important customers.
