The history of Element Metech

Element was originally formed out of the in-house laboratories of Stork, the Dutch engineering and manufacturing company, and we trace our origins back to 1827, over 190 years ago. Our calibration business has a long and rich history dating back over 70 years, and it all started in a Swedish Air Force instrument workshop in 1947. We are the calibration division of Element, now known as Element Metech since June 2018.

FFV Aerotech

Until 1994 the business was a division of FFV Aerotech. On January 1, 1994, FFV Metrology was formed as a subsidiary of FFV Aerotech, which was also the year we launched our Finnish business, FFV Mittausteknika OY.

Celsius Metech and Saab Metech

In 1998, the Celsius group acquired FFV and was renamed Celsius Metech before establishing in Denmark and Germany in 1999. In 2000, Saab acquired the Celsius group and we became Saab Metech.

Bodycote Metech

In 2006, Saab signed an agreement with Bodycote International Plc on the transfer of shares in Saab Metech and its subsidiaries. At this point, Bodycote acquired a large number of test facilities around the world and Bodycote Testing Group was established. Our name became Bodycote Metech.

Exova Metech

In 2008, the entire Bodycote Testing Group was acquired by the American private equity company CD&R. The new name became Exova and we became Exova Metech. In 2013, we established in the Czech Republic and in 2014, we moved into Norway while also expanding outside Europe into China and USA as a result of an outsourcing partnership.

Element Metech

In June 2017, Exova Group was acquired by Element Materials Technology. We are the calibration division of Element, now known as Element Metech from June 2018.

Exova and Vestas, the world’s leading producer of wind turbines, have a relationship spanning over 15 years. When Vestas took the decision to focus its resources on core operations, it launched a competitive tender to seek an outsourcing partner for its calibration services.

Element Metech already had an in-depth understanding of the Vestas business, and anticipated their needs to develop a tailored solution able to deliver the required efficiencies while maintaining strict quality standards. Metech built its solution around its flexible operating model, which enables calibration testing to be conducted in situ, or for tools to be sent to Metech facilities via a bespoke logistics arrangement.

Element Metech and Vestas have entered a five year long term agreement whereby Metech became the preferred supplier of calibration services including:

Transfer of technology assets and skilled personnel through the acquisition of operations in Lem, Denmark and Denver, USA

Extend support to Vestas, as well as giving Exova the platform to grow our calibration footprint and create opportunities with new and existing customers worldwide.

Through long-term partnerships we work closely together for the beneft of our customers. Element Metech is the leading independent calibration provider in Europe, and since 1947 we have been growing continuously through outsourcing partnerships.

Specializing in outsourcing of internal calibration laboratories means deep understanding in many industries and new capabilities, accreditations and capacity that benefits all our customers.

Harmonized processes and quality

We are experts at interpreting quality requirements and standards from many industry sectors. In an Element Metech partnership we will help you to identify and implement the right quality level throughout the organization.

By outsourcing your calibration operations you will benefit from economies of scale with opportunities to increase instrument utilization and harmonize procedures facilitating implementation of technology changes or adaptation to new environmental requirements.

Outsourcing means you can focus on your core business, leaving all calibration and maintenance of measurement equipment to us including laboratory equipment and staff, reducing CAPEX (Capital Expenditure) and administration costs. This also means Element Metech from now on takes full responsibility for investments, maintenance of accreditations and staff.

What about the staff?

From being a part of the internal costs, when an internal calibration facility becomes a part of Element Metech this also means employees become an important part of our core business. Often this also means opportunities to work with other Element Metech clients and other types of equipment.
